The Ultimate Adventure Tour

The tour continues to offer guests the perfect combination of wildlife, scenic beauty and adventure activities and also includes a night of camping at the Fish River Canyon.

DAY 1 – 2: CAPE TOWN

We start our tour in Cape Town, considered by many to be one of the world’s most beautiful cities. We meet at the MOJO HOTEL at 13h00, and after a briefing and some formalities, the adventure begins with a hike up Table Mountain, led by our tour guide. The views over the city and the Atlantic Ocean are spectacular. The next day we explore the scenic Cape Peninsula by vehicle, visiting Hout Bay, Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope. We return to the Lodge to freshen up, then head out for dinner and a night of fun at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. On occasion we may have to adjust this itinerary to accommodate the weather.

We spend both our nights at the MOJO HOTEL. Located in Sea Point, the hotel is conveniently situated close to shops, restaurants and the ocean promenade.

DAY 3: WEST COAST

We leave the Mother City behind us and, after one last iconic view of Table Mountain from across the bay, we travel north through the “Swartland” and along the West Coast into Namaqualand, a completely new environment shaped largely by the dry winds blowing off the cold Benguela current. In the early spring this usually barren area comes to life with the blooming of millions of desert flowers, painting the landscape in an unforgettable display of vibrant colours.

Our route is one of contrast and ever-changing scenery, from wide open spaces to the dramatic rock formations found in the Cederberg Mountains. We cover some distance today and overnight in the small town of Springbok, nestled amongst rocky outcrops in the Namaqua Desert.

DAY 4: ORANGE RIVER

Today we cross the border into Namibia, known for its dramatic landscapes and beautiful desert vistas. Once through the border, we travel the short distance to our base on the banks of the Orange River. We are joined by our river guides, and after a quick lunch and a safety briefing, we start the canoe adventure.

The Orange River is the longest river in South Africa and creates a natural border to Namibia. Seen from above, the river forms a green ribbon winding its way through the desert and the towering mountains of the Richtersveld National Park. We glide downstream past twisted rock formations, the desert a stone’s throw from the water. It’s hot, but the water is inviting. In the late afternoon we return back to camp and enjoy the evening next to the river.

DAY 5: FISH RIVER CANYON

Today we head to the magnificent Fish River Canyon, second in size only to the Grand Canyon. Formed over hundreds of millions of years, the 160km long ravine is a testament to the inexorable power of nature and evidence of ice ages and raging torrents past. Today the Fish River flows only during the wet summer months, reduced to pools of stagnant water in the dry winter. We will inspect nature’s handiwork from the lip of the canyon. We camp nearby, at Hobas.

DAY 6: FISH RIVER CANYON – NAMIB

Today we follow a beautifully scenic road into the true Namib, to our destination for the next two nights, the GREENFIRE DESERT CAMP. Located on our 7000 hectare private reserve in the Namib Rand, home to numerous species of desert adapted fauna and flora, the camp is nestled against a rock outcrop, surrounded by stark mountains and red dune-fields. The reserve offers visitors a private and exclusive desert experience, spectacular vistas, and time to discover the vibrant, living desert, with plants and animals ingeniously adapted to the environment.

DAY 7: NAMIB DESERT

We conduct a morning walk with our guide to gain close-up insight into the desert and its unique geology and ecology. During the heat of the day it’s customary to relax at the camp, to enjoy the plunge pool and a cold drink, but the energetic are free to explore the surrounding rock formations, to birdwatch, or to sit alone high up on a rock, mesmerised by the changing colours of the vast landscape. In the afternoon we explore a bit further afield on an open vehicle desert drive, searching for gemsbok and bat-eared foxes, before stopping at a suitable place to enjoy the red sunset over a traditional sun-downer drink. Once it is dark, we slowly drive back to the camp, hoping to encounter some of the nocturnal animals common to the area, such as porcupine, aardvark, or brown hyena.

DAY 8: SOSSUSVLEI

An early start, we travel directly to Sesriem and the dune fields of Sossusvlei. Here we climb one of the biggest sand dunes on earth, to reveal rank upon rank of dunes marching into the distance. As the day warms we come down from our high perch to take an open 4×4 vehicle into the heart of Sossusvlei and Deadvlei. We explore these world-renowned landmarks on foot, the varied colours of the ever silent red dunes, the white salt pan and the utterly stark beauty a truly memorable experience.
The 4×4’s return us to our vehicle. We stop to view Sesriem Canyon, and then continue into the desert where we camp for the night.

DAY 9: DUNES – SWAKOPMUND

A relatively short journey today, we cross Kuiseb Canyon and Namib-Naukluft National Park, stopping briefly in Walvis Bay, Namibia’s major port, before arriving in the seaside town of Swakopmund. Established in 1892, the German colonial influence is evident in the history, architecture, culture and cuisine of the town to this day. Modern Swakopmund is a visitor’s paradise, with great restaurants and shops, friendly locals and a multitude of adventure activities on offer. We will spend two nights here, giving us a full day to explore the town, and to be thrilled by our choice of adventure. For those who want to relax and wash the desert dust away, the beaches are fantastic – the white sand warmed by the hot desert sun, but the Atlantic Ocean always remains refreshingly cool.

DAY 10: SWAKOPMUND

Today we are free to explore the town, with its beaches, markets and curio shops. A huge variety of adventure options are available, including quad biking, sky diving, dune boarding, ocean safari, fishing and much more. To really get the feel of Swakopmund, we will eat at local restaurants on both nights (own expense).

DAY 11: SPITZKOPPE

Today we head north up the Skeleton Coast, a barren and desolate stretch of coastline trapped between the Atlantic Ocean and the Namib Desert, with scattered ship wrecks littering the beaches. The Bushmen called this “The Land That God Made in Anger”. We visit Cape Cross, named for the crosses erected by Portuguese explorers in the late 1400s. Today this protected area, Cape Cross Seal Reserve, is home to tens of thousands of Cape Fur Seals and one of the largest seal colonies in the world.

We venture back inland, travelling through the vast desert to the towering granite peaks of the Spitzkoppe, its highest peak stretching 600 meters above the desert floor, amongst a riot of giant boulders and secret caves. We have the afternoon to explore this monolith, camping tonight at the foot of the mountain .

DAY 12 – 13: ETOSHA

Etosha is unique. At its heart is a vast salt pan, Etosha Pan, nearly 5000km² of dazzling white, sun-baked lake bed in the dry winter, and a shallow sea with tens of thousands of strutting flamingos, jumping fish and lurking terrapins in summer. Surrounding this pan is a varied landscape of bushveld and grassland, home to hundreds of species of wildlife.
We will spend these days exploring the expanses of park from the high vantage point of our vehicle, game driving and visiting water holes. During peak season, when the rest camps are crowded, we may opt to camp outside the park.

DAY 14: CAPRIVI

Today we cover some distance, travelling through towns and villages of northern Namibia, giving us a glimpse into the daily lives of the local people. We arrive on the banks of the Okavango River, suddenly green, lush and inviting. Not far from here the river empties into the Okavango Delta, but right here the river is strong and deep, the trees tall and the crocodiles huge. The cool shade of the river bank is a welcome respite from the bright Namibian sun.

DAY 15 – 16: OKAVANGO DELTA

It is with great excitement that we cross the border into Botswana and travel the short distance to the Okavango Delta, the world’s largest inland delta and a truly unique spectacle of nature.

The Okavango River, emanating from central Angola, far to the northwest, flows south- and eastwards, before slowing and spreading into one of the world’s only true inland deltas, creating as it does so a unique ecosystem that supports a huge variety of animal and plant life. The sight of a Jacana striding delicately amongst the flowering lilies, the Bee Eater diving to prey on an unsuspecting insect, and of course the familiar cry of the African Fish Eagle – all combine to create the canvas of one of nature’s unique masterpieces. The river, eventually spilling its contents into the vast plains of the Makgadikgadi sands, disappears.

Our comfortable and well appointed camp on the edge of one of the largest lagoons serves as a base from which we explore. We will glide through narrow reed-lined channels by mokoro, walk on uninhabited islands, and picnic in the wilderness, while learning about the animals and plants of the Delta from local guides who have grown up in the area. Through informal interaction with the guides, we will have the opportunity to learn about the local people and their way of life in this isolated wilderness. We will also have time to simply relax and enjoy the views over a glistening lagoon from a beautiful wooden deck, cold drink in hand, or take a refreshing dip in the pool. We will enjoy a relaxing sunset cruise on a boat. A helicopter flip, to see the vastness of the Delta from the air, is recommended (own expense).

DAY 17: MAUN

Starting early, we begin our journey to frontier town of Maun. We will spend some time stocking up on basic supplies, before travelling the short distance out of town to the DRIFTERS MAUN TENTED LODGE, our stop for the night.

The lodge is situated on the banks of the Boteti River. This river is known to change its flow direction, depending upon the season and rainfall patterns. The lodge offers comfortable en suite accommodation, swimming pool, bar, restaurant and birdlife

DAY 18: MAKGADIKGADI PANS

We enjoy a relaxed morning at the lodge, spending time along the river bank, savouring the tranquillity of the area, or lounging at the swimming pool. For those interested, we recommend a local village walk. Chenoga Village, not far from our lodge, is not on a regular tourist route, so you have the opportunity to explore an authentic village with one of our staff from the lodge, who lives in the village.

We have a late brunch before continuing our journey eastward into the spectacular Makgadikgadi Salt Pans area. Oceans of golden grass give way to the stark white pans, under a very big sky. We stop to take in the serene isolation of this expanse, before continuing to our camp for the night, at Elephant Sands. Close-up sightings of elephants at the water hole are almost guaranteed.

DAY 19: KASANE – VICTORIA FALLS

Venturing north today, we make our way to the slow, placid Chobe River, an ideal habitat for hippos and crocodiles, and an attraction to some of the biggest herds of elephant and buffalo on earth. This afternoon we enjoy an extensive boat cruise on the river, within Chobe National Park. Gliding close to the banks, we hope to silently approach the animals that come down to the river to drink. Back on land, we cross the border into Zimbabwe and make our way to our accommodation for the next two nights. The lodge is centrally situated and within walking distance of the falls and other attractions.

DAY 20: VICTORIA FALLS

Awaking in the adventure capital of Africa, it is with new excitement that we explore the amazing Victoria Falls, locally known as “Mosi-oa-Tunya “, meaning “The Smoke that Thunders”. Your entry fee to the falls is included in the tour price, and you are free to spend as much time viewing the falls, and exploring the surrounding rain forest, as you like.

During our stay in Victoria Falls, various other attractions can be visited, like the tribal village or curio market. Vic Falls is also home to a multitude of adventure activities, such as an aircraft flip over the falls, or a boat trip on the Zambezi River, white water rafting or bungee jumping, but allowance must be made for the extra expense of these optional activities.

We spend two nights here, thus allowing you some time to explore the town and all it has to offer and to focus on the attractions and activities that interest you. We eat out in a local restaurant on both nights (own expense). Relax to the sound of the African night and the distant roar of the falls, and drink a toast to your adventure.

DAY 21: HWANGE

After breakfast we travel the relatively short distance to the renowned Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe’s premier game reserve. Famous for its massive herds of elephant and buffalo, the park is host to over 100 species of mammal and 400 species of bird, with lion, leopard and wild dog regularly sighted. This afternoon we will do an open vehicle game drive with local guides providing intimate knowledge of the area.

DAY 22: BULAWAYO – MATOBO

Today we travel south to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second largest city, with its uniquely wide streets. We continue to the Matobo area where, in the afternoon, we enjoy an open vehicle drive into the Matobo National Park. Here, we will leave the vehicle to track rhino through the bush on foot. For most people, seeing these massive beasts on their own terms is a thrilling and moving experience.

Tonight we camp at the base a granite dome amongst the balancing boulders of the Matobo Hills.

DAY 23: LIMPOPO

Our last night will be spent in Botswana, on a private game reserve along the banks of the Limpopo River. We will take our final walk together along the river, to savour the sights and smells of the African bush and catch our last glimpse of animals living free and wild. We end the day with dinner in the bush around a flickering fire.

DAY 24: JOHANNESBURG

This morning, after crossing the border into South Africa, we follow a scenic route through the Waterberg Mountains, before entering the bustle of Africa’s economic heart, the golden city of Johannesburg. The tour ends on arrival in the late afternoon in Johannesburg.

TAG 1 – 2: KAPSTADT

Wir starten unsere Tour in Kapstadt, die von vielen als eine der schönsten Städte der Welt angesehen wird. Wir treffen uns in der Mojo Hotel um 13h00, und nach einem Briefing und einigen Formalitäten beginnt das Abenteuer mit einer Wanderung auf den Tafelberg, angeführt von unserem Reiseleiter. Die Aussicht über die Stadt und den Atlantik ist spektakulär. Am nächsten Tag erkunden wir die malerische Kap-Halbinsel mit dem Auto, besuchen Hout Bay, Cape Point und das Kap der Guten Hoffnung. Wir kehren zur Lodge zurück, um uns zu erfrischen, dann gehen wir zum Abendessen und eine Nacht voller Spaß an der Victoria und Alfred Waterfront. Gelegentlich müssen wir diese Reiseroute an das Wetter anpassen.

Wir verbringen beide Nächte in der Mojo Hotel. Das Hotel liegt in Sea Point, die Lodge liegt günstig in der Nähe von Geschäften, Restaurants und der Meerespromenade.

TAG 3: WESTKÜSTE

Wir lassen die Mutterstadt hinter uns und reisen nach einem letzten ikonischen Blick auf den Tafelberg von der anderen Seite der Bucht nach Norden durch das „Swartland” und entlang der Westküste ins Namaqualand, eine völlig neue Umgebung, die weitgehend von den trockenen Winden der kalte Benguela-Strömung geprägt ist. Im frühen Frühjahr erwacht diese meist öde Gegend mit dem Aufblühen von Millionen von Wüstenblumen zum Leben und malt die Landschaft in einem unvergesslichen Farbspiel.

Unsere Route ist eine kontrastreiche und sich ständig verändernde Landschaft, von weiten Freiflächen bis hin zu den dramatischen Felsformationen in den Zederbergen. Wir legen heute eine Strecke zurück und übernachten in der kleinen Stadt Springbok, eingebettet in Felsvorsprüngen in der Namaqua-Wüste.

TAG 4: ORANGE RIVER

Heute überqueren wir die Grenze nach Namibia, das für seine dramatischen Landschaften und wunderschönen Wüstenansichten bekannt ist. Einmal durch die Grenze, reisen wir die kurze Strecke zu unserer Basis am Ufer des Oranje. Wir werden von unseren Flussguides begleitet, und nach einem schnellen Mittagessen und einem Sicherheitsbriefing starten wir das Kanu-Abenteuer.

Der Orange River ist der längste Fluss Südafrikas und bildet eine natürliche Grenze zu Namibia. Von oben betrachtet bildet der Fluss ein grünes Band, das sich durch die Wüste und die hohen Berge des Richtersveld Nationalparks schlängelt. Wir gleiten flussabwärts an gewundenen Felsformationen vorbei, die Wüste einen Steinwurf vom Wasser entfernt. Es ist heiß, aber das Wasser ist einladend. Am späten Nachmittag kehren wir zurück ins Camp und genießen den Abend am Fluss.

TAG 5: FISH RIVER CANYON

Heute geht es zum herrlichen Fish River Canyon, dem zweitgrößten nach dem Grand Canyon. Die 160 km lange Schlucht, die über Hunderte von Millionen von Jahren entstanden ist, zeugt von der unaufhaltsamen Kraft der Natur und von Eiszeiten und tobenden Wildbächen. Heute fließt der Fish River nur noch während der nassen Sommermonate, die im trockenen Winter auf stagnierendes Wasser reduziert sind. Wir werden die Handarbeit der Natur von der Lippe des Canyons aus inspizieren. Wir campen in der Nähe, in Hobas.

TAG 6: FISH RIVER CANYON – NAMIB

Heute folgen wir einer wunderschönen Panoramastraße in die wahre Namib, zu unserem Ziel für die nächsten zwei Nächte, dem GREENFIRE DESERT CAMP. In unserem 7000 Hektar großen privaten Reservat im Namib Rand, in dem zahlreiche Arten von wüstenangepasster Fauna und Flora leben, liegt das Camp an einem Felsvorsprung, umgeben von starken Bergen und roten Dünenfeldern. Das Reservat bietet den Besuchern ein privates und exklusives Wüstenerlebnis, spektakuläre Ausblicke und Zeit, die dynamische, lebendige Wüste mit Pflanzen und Tieren, die genial an die Umwelt angepasst sind, zu entdecken.

TAG 7: NAMIB WÜSTE

Wir führen einen morgendlichen Spaziergang mit unserem Guide durch, um einen Einblick in die Wüste und ihre einzigartige Geologie und Ökologie zu erhalten. Während der Hitze des Tages ist es üblich, sich im Camp zu entspannen, den Pool und ein kaltes Getränk zu genießen, oder aber man nutzt die Zeit, um die umliegenden Felsformationen zu erkunden, Vögel zu beobachten, oder allein oben auf einem Felsen zu sitzen, fasziniert von den wechselnden Farben der weiten Landschaft. Am Nachmittag erkunden wir die Landschaft auf einer offenen Fahrzeug-Wüstenfahrt etwas weiter weg, auf der Suche nach Gemsbok- und Fledermausohrenfüchsen, bevor wir an einem geeigneten Ort anhalten, um den roten Sonnenuntergang bei einem traditionellen Sundowner-Drink zu genießen. Sobald es dunkel ist, fahren wir langsam zurück zum Lager, in der Hoffnung, einige der nächtlichen Tiere, die in der Gegend bekannt sind, wie Stachelschweine, Erdferkel oder braune Hyänen zu begegnen.

TAG 8: SOSSUSVLEI

Ein früher Start, wir fahren direkt nach Sesriem und die Dünenfelder von Sossusvlei. Hier erklimmen wir eine der größten Sanddünen der Erde, die sich Reihe um Reihe in die Ferne hinausstrecken. Wenn der Tag immer wärmer wird, kommen wir von unserem hohen Sitz herunter, um ein offenes 4×4-Fahrzeug ins Herz von Sossusvlei und Deadvlei zu nehmen. Wir erkunden diese weltberühmten Wahrzeichen zu Fuß, die abwechslungsreichen Farben der immer stillen roten Dünen, die weiße Salzpfanne und die absolut steife Schönheit ein unvergessliches Erlebnis.
Das 4×4 bringt uns zurück zu unserem Fahrzeug Wir halten an, um den Sesriem Canyon zu sehen, und fahren dann weiter in die Wüste, wo wir übernachten.

TAG 9: SANDDÜNEN – SWAKOPMUND

Mit einer relativ kurzen Fahrt überqueren wir heute den Kuiseb Canyon und den Namib-Naukluft Nationalpark und halten kurz in Walvis Bay, Namibias größtem Hafen, bevor wir in der Küstenstadt Swakopmund ankommen. Die Stadt wurde 1892 gegründet und der deutsche koloniale Einfluss zeigt sich in der Geschichte, Architektur, Kultur und Küche der Stadt bis heute. Das moderne Swakopmund ist ein Besucherparadies mit tollen Restaurants und Geschäften, freundlichen Einheimischen und einer Vielzahl an Abenteueraktivitäten. Wir werden zwei Nächte hier verbringen, haben einen ganzen Tag, um die Stadt zu erkunden, und sich von der Wahl des Abenteuers begeistert zulassen. Für diejenigen, die sich entspannen und den Wüstenstaub wegspülen wollen, sind die Strände fantastisch – der weiße Sand, der von der heißen Wüstensonne erwärmt wird, aber der Atlantik bleibt immer erfrischend kühl.

TAG 10: SWAKOPMUND

Heute haben wir Zeit die Stadt mit ihren Stränden, Märkten und Souvenirläden zu erkunden. TAG 11: SPITZKOPPE

Heute fahren wir Richtung Norden die Skelettküste hinauf, ein karger und öder Küstenstreifen zwischen dem Atlantik und der Namib-Wüste, mit verstreuten Schiffswracks, die die Strände übersäen. Die Buschmänner nannten dies „das Land, das Gott in Zorn gemacht hat“. Wir besuchen Cape Cross, benannt nach den Kreuzen, die von portugiesischen Entdeckern in den späten 1400er Jahren errichtet wurden. Heute beherbergt dieses Schutzgebiet, das Cape Cross Seal Reserve, zehntausende Robben und eine der größten Robbenkolonien der Welt.

Wir wagen uns zurück ins Landesinnere und reisen durch die weite Wüste zu den hoch aufragenden Granitgipfeln der Spitzkoppe, ihrem höchsten Gipfel, der sich 600 Meter über dem Wüstenboden erstreckt, inmitten eines Aufruhrs aus riesigen Felsbrocken und geheimen Höhlen. Wir haben den Nachmittag, um diesen Monolithen zu erkunden. Wir campen heute Abend am Fuße des Berges.

TAG 12 – 13: ETOSHA NATIONALPARK

Etosha ist einzigartig. In seinem Herzen befindet sich eine riesige Salzpfanne, die Etosha Pfanne, die im trockenen Winter fast 5000 km2 blendendes weißes, sonnengebackenes Seebett und im Sommer ein seichtes Meer mit zehntausenden stolzierenden Flamingos, springenden Fischen und lauernden Wasserschildkröten umfasst. Umgeben von dieser Pfanne ist eine abwechslungsreiche Landschaft von Busch-und Grünland, die Heimat von Hunderten von Arten von Wildtieren.
Wir werden diese Tage die Weiten des Parks vom hohen Aussichtspunkt unseres Fahrzeugs aus erkunden, Game Drives unternehmen und Wasserlöcher besuchen. Während der Hauptsaison, wenn die Restcamps überfüllt sind, haben wir eventuell auch die Option außerhalb des Parks zu campen.

TAG 14: CAPRIVI

Heute legen wir eine Strecke zurück, reisen durch Städte und Dörfer im Norden Namibias und geben uns einen Einblick in das tägliche Leben der Einheimischen. Wir kommen an den Ufern des Okavango Flusses an, plötzlich grün, üppig und einladend. Nicht weit von hier mündet der Fluss in das Okavango-Delta, aber genau hier ist der Fluss stark und tief, die Bäume hoch und die Krokodile riesig. Der kühle Schatten des Flussufers ist eine willkommene Atempause von der hellen namibischen Sonne.

TAG 15 – 16: OKAVANGO DELTA

Mit großer Vorfreude überqueren wir die Grenze nach Botswana und reisen die kurze Strecke zum Okavango-Delta, dem größten Binnendelta der Welt und einem wahrhaft einzigartigen Naturschauspiel.

Der Okavango-Fluss, der von Zentralangola weit im Nordwesten ausströmt, fließt nach Süden und Osten, bevor er sich verlangsamt und sich in einem der einzigen echten Binnendeltas der Welt ausbreitet. Dadurch entsteht ein einzigartiges Ökosystem, das eine große Vielfalt an Tier- und Pflanzenleben unterstützt. Der Anblick eines Blatthühnchens, das zart zwischen den blühenden Lilien schreitet, der Bienenfresser, der zur Beute auf ein ahnungsloses Insekt taucht, und natürlich der vertraute Schrei des Afrikanischen Fischadlers – alle verbinden sich, um die Leinwand eines der einzigartigen Meisterwerke der Natur zu erschaffen. Der Fluss, der schließlich seinen Inhalt in die weiten Ebenen des Makgadikgadi-Sandes ergießt, verschwindet.

Unser komfortables und gut ausgestattetes Camp am Rande einer der größten Lagunen dient als Ausgangspunkt, von dem aus wir das Delta erkunden. Wir werden durch schmale Schilfkanäle mit Mokoros gleiten, auf unbewohnten Inseln spazieren gehen und in der Wildnis picknicken, während wir von lokalen Guides, die in der Gegend aufgewachsen sind, etwas über die Tiere und Pflanzen des Deltas erfahren. Durch informellen Austausch mit den Guides werden wir die Möglichkeit haben, die Einheimischen und ihre Lebensweise in dieser abgelegenen Wildnis kennenzulernen. Wir werden auch Zeit haben, um einfach zu entspannen und den Blick über eine glitzernde Lagune von einer schönen Holzterrasse aus zu genießen, ein kaltes Getränk in der Hand oder ein erfrischendes Bad im Pool zu nehmen. Wir werden eine entspannende Sonnenuntergangs-Bootsfahrt genießen. Um die Weite des Deltas aus der Luft zu sehen, empfehlen wir eine Hubschrauberfahrt über das Delta (eigene Kosten).

TAG 17: MAUN

Schon früh beginnen wir unsere Reise in die Grenzstadt Maun. Wir werden einige Zeit damit verbringen, Grundvorräte aufzufüllen, bevor wir die kurze Strecke außerhalb der Stadt zu der DRIFTERS MAUN TENTED LODGE, unserer Haltestelle für die Nacht, fahren.

Die Lodge liegt am Ufer des Flusses Boteti. Es ist bekannt, dass dieser Fluss seine Flussrichtung ändert, abhängig von der Jahreszeit und den Niederschlagsmustern. Die Lodge bietet komfortable feste Zelte mit Bad, Pool, Bar, Restaurant und Vogelwelt.

TAG 18: MAKGADIKGADI SALZPFANNEN

Wir genießen einen entspannten Morgen in der Lodge, verbringen Zeit am Ufer des Flusses, genießen die Ruhe der Gegend, oder faulenzen am Pool. Für Interessenten empfehlen wir einen lokalen Dorfspaziergang. Das Chenoga Dorf, nicht weit von unserer Lodge, ist nicht auf einer regelmäßigen touristischen Route, so haben Sie die Möglichkeit, ein authentisches Dorf mit einem unserer Mitarbeiter von der Lodge, der im Dorf lebt, zu erkunden.

Wir haben einen späten Brunch bevor wir unsere Reise nach Osten in das spektakuläre Makgadikgadi Salzpfannen Gebiet fortsetzen. Ozeane aus goldenem Gras weichen den schroffen weißen Pfannen, unter einem sehr großen Himmel. Wir halten an, um die ruhige Isolation dieser Weite zu genießen, bevor wir die Nacht in unserem Camp bei Elephant Sands verbringen. Nahaufnahmen von Elefanten am Wasserloch sind fast garantiert.

TAG 19: KASANE – VICTORIA FALLS

Wenn wir uns heute nach Norden wagen, machen wir uns auf den Weg zum langsamen, ruhigen Chobe River, einem idealen Lebensraum für Flusspferde und Krokodile und einer Attraktion für einige der größten Elefanten- und Büffelherden der Erde. Heute Nachmittag genießen wir eine ausgiebige Bootsfahrt auf dem Fluss im Chobe Nationalpark. In der Nähe der Ufer gleitend, hoffen wir, still an die Tiere heranzutreten, die zum Fluss herunterkommen, um zu trinken. Zurück an Land überqueren wir die Grenze nach Simbabwe und machen uns auf den Weg zu unserer Unterkunft für die Nacht. Die Lodge ist zentral gelegen und nur wenige Gehminuten von den Wasserfällen und anderen Sehenswürdigkeiten entfernt.

TAG 20: VICTORIA FALLS

Wenn wir in der Abenteuerhauptstadt Afrikas aufwachen, können wir mit neuer Aufregung die erstaunlichen Victoria Wasserfälle erkunden, die lokal als „Mosi-oa-Tunya“ bekannt sind, was „der Rauch, der donnert” bedeutet. Die Eintrittsgebühr für die Wasserfälle ist im Tourpreis inbegriffen, und wir können so viel Zeit verbringen, die Wasserfälle zu betrachten und den umliegenden Regenwald zu erkunden, wie wir möchten.
Während unseres Aufenthaltes in Victoria Falls können verschiedene andere Attraktionen besucht werden, wie das Stammesdorf oder ein Souvenirmarkt. Victoria Falls ist auch die Heimat einer Vielzahl von Abenteuer-Aktivitäten, wie ein Hubschrauberflug über die Wasserfälle, eine Bootsfahrt auf dem Zambezi River, Wildwasser-Rafting oder Bungee-Jumping (auf eigene Kosten).
Wir verbringen zwei Nächte hier, so dass wir einige Zeit haben, um die Stadt und alles, was es zu bieten hat zu erkunden und die Attraktionen und Aktivitäten, die uns interessieren, zu unternehmen. Wir essen in einem lokalen Restaurant an beiden Nächten (eigene Kosten). TAG 21: HWANGE

Nach dem Frühstück fahren wir die kurze Strecke zum berühmten Hwange Nationalpark, Simbabwes führendes Wildreservat. Berühmt für seine riesigen Herden von Elefanten und Büffeln, beherbergt der Park mehr als 100 Säugetierarten und 400 Vogelarten, wobei Löwen, Leoparden und Wildhunde regelmäßig gesichtet werden. Heute Nachmittag machen wir eine Safari in einem offenen Fahrzeug mit lokalen Guides mit engen Kenntnissen der Gegend.

TAG 22: BULAWAYO – MATOBO

Heute fahren wir nach Süden nach Bulawayo, Simbabwes zweitgrößte Stadt mit ihren einzigartig breiten Straßen. Wir fahren weiter zum Matobo Gebiet, wo wir am Nachmittag eine Fahrt mit einem offenen Fahrzeug in den Matobo Nationalpark genießen. Hier verlassen wir das Fahrzeug, um Nashörner zu Fuß durch den Busch zu verfolgen. Für die meisten Menschen ist es eine spannende und bewegende Erfahrung, diese massiven Tiere zu ihren eigenen Bedingungen zu sehen.

Heute abend campen wir auf der Basis eine Granitkuppel zwischen den balancierenden Felsen der Matobo Hills.

Unsere letzte Nacht verbringen wir in Botswana, in einem privaten Wildreservat am Ufer des Limpopo Flusses. Wir werden unseren letzten gemeinsamen Spaziergang entlang des Flusses machen, um die Anblicke und Gerüche des afrikanischen Busches zu genießen und unseren letzten Blick auf frei und wild lebende Tiere zu erhaschen. Wir beenden den Tag mit einem Abendessen im Busch um ein flackerndes Feuer.

TAG 24: JOHANNESBURG

Heute Morgen, nachdem wir die Grenze nach Südafrika überquert haben, folgen wir einer landschaftlich reizvollen Route durch das Waterberg Gebiet, bevor wir in das geschäftige Wirtschaftszentrum Afrikas und die Goldene Stadt Johannesburg erreichen. Die Tour endet mit der Ankunft am späten Nachmittag in der JOHANNESBURG.

A tour through Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe that includes a multitude of highlights such as Sossusvlei, Etosha, the Okavango Delta and Vic Falls to name but a few – this remains the ultimate African adventure!

DAY 1 – 2: CAPE TOWN

We start our tour in Cape Town, considered by many to be one of the world’s most beautiful cities. We meet at the MOJO HOTEL at 13h00, and after a briefing and some formalities, the adventure begins with a hike up Table Mountain, led by our tour guide. The views over the city and the Atlantic Ocean are spectacular. The next day we explore the scenic Cape Peninsula by vehicle, visiting Hout Bay, Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope. We return to the Lodge to freshen up, then head out for dinner and a night of fun at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. On occasion we may have to adjust this itinerary to accommodate the weather.

We spend both our nights at the MOJO HOTEL. Located in Sea Point, the hotel is conveniently situated close to shops, restaurants and the ocean promenade.

DAY 3: WEST COAST

We leave the Mother City behind us and, after one last iconic view of Table Mountain from across the bay, we travel north through the “Swartland” and along the West Coast into Namaqualand, a completely new environment shaped largely by the dry winds blowing off the cold Benguela current. In the early spring this usually barren area comes to life with the blooming of millions of desert flowers, painting the landscape in an unforgettable display of vibrant colours.

Our route is one of contrast and ever-changing scenery, from wide open spaces to the dramatic rock formations found in the Cederberg Mountains. We cover some distance today and overnight in the small town of Springbok, nestled amongst rocky outcrops in the Namaqua Desert.

DAY 4: ORANGE RIVER

Today we cross the border into Namibia, known for its dramatic landscapes and beautiful desert vistas. Once through the border, we travel the short distance to our base on the banks of the Orange River. We are joined by our river guides, and after a quick lunch and a safety briefing, we start the canoe adventure.

The Orange River is the longest river in South Africa and creates a natural border to Namibia. Seen from above, the river forms a green ribbon winding its way through the desert and the towering mountains of the Richtersveld National Park. We glide downstream past twisted rock formations, the desert a stone’s throw from the water. It’s hot, but the water is inviting. In the late afternoon we return back to camp and enjoy the evening next to the river.

DAY 5: FISH RIVER CANYON

Today we head to the magnificent Fish River Canyon, second in size only to the Grand Canyon. Formed over hundreds of millions of years, the 160km long ravine is a testament to the inexorable power of nature and evidence of ice ages and raging torrents past. Today the Fish River flows only during the wet summer months, reduced to pools of stagnant water in the dry winter. We will inspect nature’s handiwork from the lip of the canyon. We camp nearby, at Hobas.

DAY 6: FISH RIVER CANYON – NAMIB

Today we follow a beautifully scenic road into the true Namib, to our destination for the next two nights, the GREENFIRE DESERT CAMP. Located on our 7000 hectare private reserve in the Namib Rand, home to numerous species of desert adapted fauna and flora, the camp is nestled against a rock outcrop, surrounded by stark mountains and red dune-fields. The reserve offers visitors a private and exclusive desert experience, spectacular vistas, and time to discover the vibrant, living desert, with plants and animals ingeniously adapted to the environment.

DAY 7: NAMIB DESERT

We conduct a morning walk with our guide to gain close-up insight into the desert and its unique geology and ecology. During the heat of the day it’s customary to relax at the camp, to enjoy the plunge pool and a cold drink, but the energetic are free to explore the surrounding rock formations, to birdwatch, or to sit alone high up on a rock, mesmerised by the changing colours of the vast landscape. In the afternoon we explore a bit further afield on an open vehicle desert drive, searching for gemsbok and bat-eared foxes, before stopping at a suitable place to enjoy the red sunset over a traditional sun-downer drink. Once it is dark, we slowly drive back to the camp, hoping to encounter some of the nocturnal animals common to the area, such as porcupine, aardvark, or brown hyena.

DAY 8: SOSSUSVLEI

An early start, we travel directly to Sesriem and the dune fields of Sossusvlei. Here we climb one of the biggest sand dunes on earth, to reveal rank upon rank of dunes marching into the distance. As the day warms we come down from our high perch to take an open 4×4 vehicle into the heart of Sossusvlei and Deadvlei. We explore these world-renowned landmarks on foot, the varied colours of the ever silent red dunes, the white salt pan and the utterly stark beauty a truly memorable experience.
The 4×4’s return us to our vehicle. We stop to view Sesriem Canyon, and then continue into the desert where we camp for the night.

DAY 9: DUNES – SWAKOPMUND

A relatively short journey today, we cross Kuiseb Canyon and Namib-Naukluft National Park, stopping briefly in Walvis Bay, Namibia’s major port, before arriving in the seaside town of Swakopmund. Established in 1892, the German colonial influence is evident in the history, architecture, culture and cuisine of the town to this day. Modern Swakopmund is a visitor’s paradise, with great restaurants and shops, friendly locals and a multitude of adventure activities on offer. We will spend two nights here, giving us a full day to explore the town, and to be thrilled by our choice of adventure. For those who want to relax and wash the desert dust away, the beaches are fantastic – the white sand warmed by the hot desert sun, but the Atlantic Ocean always remains refreshingly cool.

Today we are free to explore the town, with its beaches, markets and curio shops. To really get the feel of Swakopmund, we will eat at local restaurants on both nights (own expense).

DAY 11: SPITZKOPPE

Today we head north up the Skeleton Coast, a barren and desolate stretch of coastline trapped between the Atlantic Ocean and the Namib Desert, with scattered ship wrecks littering the beaches. The Bushmen called this “The Land That God Made in Anger”. We visit Cape Cross, named for the crosses erected by Portuguese explorers in the late 1400s. Today this protected area, Cape Cross Seal Reserve, is home to tens of thousands of Cape Fur Seals and one of the largest seal colonies in the world.

We venture back inland, travelling through the vast desert to the towering granite peaks of the Spitzkoppe, its highest peak stretching 600 meters above the desert floor, amongst a riot of giant boulders and secret caves. We have the afternoon to explore this monolith, camping tonight at the foot of the mountain .

DAY 12 – 13: ETOSHA

Etosha is unique. At its heart is a vast salt pan, Etosha Pan, nearly 5000km² of dazzling white, sun-baked lake bed in the dry winter, and a shallow sea with tens of thousands of strutting flamingos, jumping fish and lurking terrapins in summer. DAY 14: CAPRIVI

Today we cover some distance, travelling through towns and villages of northern Namibia, giving us a glimpse into the daily lives of the local people. We arrive on the banks of the Okavango River, suddenly green, lush and inviting. Not far from here the river empties into the Okavango Delta, but right here the river is strong and deep, the trees tall and the crocodiles huge. The cool shade of the river bank is a welcome respite from the bright Namibian sun.

DAY 15 – 16: OKAVANGO DELTA

It is with great excitement that we cross the border into Botswana and travel the short distance to the Okavango Delta, the world’s largest inland delta and a truly unique spectacle of nature.

The Okavango River, emanating from central Angola, far to the northwest, flows south- and eastwards, before slowing and spreading into one of the world’s only true inland deltas, creating as it does so a unique ecosystem that supports a huge variety of animal and plant life. The sight of a Jacana striding delicately amongst the flowering lilies, the Bee Eater diving to prey on an unsuspecting insect, and of course the familiar cry of the African Fish Eagle – all combine to create the canvas of one of nature’s unique masterpieces. The river, eventually spilling its contents into the vast plains of the Makgadikgadi sands, disappears.

Our comfortable and well appointed camp on the edge of one of the largest lagoons serves as a base from which we explore. We will glide through narrow reed-lined channels by mokoro, walk on uninhabited islands, and picnic in the wilderness, while learning about the animals and plants of the Delta from local guides who have grown up in the area. Through informal interaction with the guides, we will have the opportunity to learn about the local people and their way of life in this isolated wilderness. We will also have time to simply relax and enjoy the views over a glistening lagoon from a beautiful wooden deck, cold drink in hand, or take a refreshing dip in the pool. We will enjoy a relaxing sunset cruise on a boat. A helicopter flip, to see the vastness of the Delta from the air, is recommended (own expense).

DAY 17: MAUN

Starting early, we begin our journey to frontier town of Maun. We will spend some time stocking up on basic supplies, before travelling the short distance out of town to the DRIFTERS MAUN TENTED LODGE, our stop for the night.

The lodge is situated on the banks of the Boteti River. This river is known to change its flow direction, depending upon the season and rainfall patterns. The lodge offers comfortable en suite accommodation, swimming pool, bar, restaurant and birdlife

DAY 18: MAKGADIKGADI PANS

We enjoy a relaxed morning at the lodge, spending time along the river bank, savouring the tranquillity of the area, or lounging at the swimming pool. For those interested, we recommend a local village walk. Chenoga Village, not far from our lodge, is not on a regular tourist route, so you have the opportunity to explore an authentic village with one of our staff from the lodge, who lives in the village.

We have a late brunch before continuing our journey eastward into the spectacular Makgadikgadi Salt Pans area. Oceans of golden grass give way to the stark white pans, under a very big sky. We stop to take in the serene isolation of this expanse, before continuing to our camp for the night, at Elephant Sands. Close-up sightings of elephants at the water hole are almost guaranteed.

DAY 19: KASANE – VICTORIA FALLS

Venturing north today, we make our way to the slow, placid Chobe River, an ideal habitat for hippos and crocodiles, and an attraction to some of the biggest herds of elephant and buffalo on earth. This afternoon we enjoy an extensive boat cruise on the river, within Chobe National Park. Gliding close to the banks, we hope to silently approach the animals that come down to the river to drink. Back on land, we cross the border into Zimbabwe and make our way to our accommodation for the next two nights. The lodge is centrally situated and within walking distance of the falls and other attractions.

DAY 20: VICTORIA FALLS

Awaking in the adventure capital of Africa, it is with new excitement that we explore the amazing Victoria Falls, locally known as “Mosi-oa-Tunya “, meaning “The Smoke that Thunders”. Your entry fee to the falls is included in the tour price, and you are free to spend as much time viewing the falls, and exploring the surrounding rain forest, as you like.

During our stay in Victoria Falls, various other attractions can be visited, like the tribal village or curio market. Vic Falls is also home to a multitude of adventure activities, such as an aircraft flip over the falls, or a boat trip on the Zambezi River, white water rafting or bungee jumping, but allowance must be made for the extra expense of these optional activities.

We spend two nights here, thus allowing you some time to explore the town and all it has to offer and to focus on the attractions and activities that interest you. We eat out in a local restaurant on both nights (own expense). Relax to the sound of the African night and the distant roar of the falls, and drink a toast to your adventure.

DAY 21: END OF TOUR

The tour will officially come to an end after breakfast. The rest of the group will continue while guests on the shorter tour option can extend their stay in Vic Falls or continue on their own arrangements.

DAY 1 – 2: CAPE TOWN

We start our tour in Cape Town, considered by many to be one of the world’s most beautiful cities. We meet at the MOJO HOTEL at 13h00, and after a briefing and some formalities, the adventure begins with a hike up Table Mountain, led by our tour guide. The views over the city and the Atlantic Ocean are spectacular. The next day we explore the scenic Cape Peninsula by vehicle, visiting Hout Bay, Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope. We return to the Lodge to freshen up, then head out for dinner and a night of fun at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. On occasion we may have to adjust this itinerary to accommodate the weather.

We spend both our nights at the MOJO HOTEL. Located in Sea Point, the hotel is conveniently situated close to shops, restaurants and the ocean promenade.

DAY 3: WEST COAST

We leave the Mother City behind us and, after one last iconic view of Table Mountain from across the bay, we travel north through the “Swartland” and along the West Coast into Namaqualand, a completely new environment shaped largely by the dry winds blowing off the cold Benguela current. In the early spring this usually barren area comes to life with the blooming of millions of desert flowers, painting the landscape in an unforgettable display of vibrant colours.

Our route is one of contrast and ever-changing scenery, from wide open spaces to the dramatic rock formations found in the Cederberg Mountains. We cover some distance today and overnight in the small town of Springbok, nestled amongst rocky outcrops in the Namaqua Desert.

DAY 4: ORANGE RIVER

Today we cross the border into Namibia, known for its dramatic landscapes and beautiful desert vistas. Once through the border, we travel the short distance to our base on the banks of the Orange River. We are joined by our river guides, and after a quick lunch and a safety briefing, we start the canoe adventure.

The Orange River is the longest river in South Africa and creates a natural border to Namibia. Seen from above, the river forms a green ribbon winding its way through the desert and the towering mountains of the Richtersveld National Park. We glide downstream past twisted rock formations, the desert a stone’s throw from the water. It’s hot, but the water is inviting. In the late afternoon we return back to camp and enjoy the evening next to the river.

DAY 5: FISH RIVER CANYON

Today we head to the magnificent Fish River Canyon, second in size only to the Grand Canyon. Formed over hundreds of millions of years, the 160km long ravine is a testament to the inexorable power of nature and evidence of ice ages and raging torrents past. Today the Fish River flows only during the wet summer months, reduced to pools of stagnant water in the dry winter. We will inspect nature’s handiwork from the lip of the canyon. We camp nearby, at Hobas.

DAY 6: FISH RIVER CANYON – NAMIB

Today we follow a beautifully scenic road into the true Namib, to our destination for the next two nights, the GREENFIRE DESERT CAMP. Located on our 7000 hectare private reserve in the Namib Rand, home to numerous species of desert adapted fauna and flora, the camp is nestled against a rock outcrop, surrounded by stark mountains and red dune-fields. The reserve offers visitors a private and exclusive desert experience, spectacular vistas, and time to discover the vibrant, living desert, with plants and animals ingeniously adapted to the environment.

DAY 7: NAMIB DESERT

We conduct a morning walk with our guide to gain close-up insight into the desert and its unique geology and ecology. During the heat of the day it’s customary to relax at the camp, to enjoy the plunge pool and a cold drink, but the energetic are free to explore the surrounding rock formations, to birdwatch, or to sit alone high up on a rock, mesmerised by the changing colours of the vast landscape. In the afternoon we explore a bit further afield on an open vehicle desert drive, searching for gemsbok and bat-eared foxes, before stopping at a suitable place to enjoy the red sunset over a traditional sun-downer drink. Once it is dark, we slowly drive back to the camp, hoping to encounter some of the nocturnal animals common to the area, such as porcupine, aardvark, or brown hyena.

DAY 8: SOSSUSVLEI

An early start, we travel directly to Sesriem and the dune fields of Sossusvlei. Here we climb one of the biggest sand dunes on earth, to reveal rank upon rank of dunes marching into the distance. As the day warms we come down from our high perch to take an open 4×4 vehicle into the heart of Sossusvlei and Deadvlei. We explore these world-renowned landmarks on foot, the varied colours of the ever silent red dunes, the white salt pan and the utterly stark beauty a truly memorable experience.
The 4×4’s return us to our vehicle. We stop to view Sesriem Canyon, and then continue into the desert where we camp for the night.

DAY 9: DUNES – SWAKOPMUND

A relatively short journey today, we cross Kuiseb Canyon and Namib-Naukluft National Park, stopping briefly in Walvis Bay, Namibia’s major port, before arriving in the seaside town of Swakopmund. Established in 1892, the German colonial influence is evident in the history, architecture, culture and cuisine of the town to this day. Modern Swakopmund is a visitor’s paradise, with great restaurants and shops, friendly locals and a multitude of adventure activities on offer. We will spend two nights here, giving us a full day to explore the town, and to be thrilled by our choice of adventure. For those who want to relax and wash the desert dust away, the beaches are fantastic – the white sand warmed by the hot desert sun, but the Atlantic Ocean always remains refreshingly cool.

DAY 10: SWAKOPMUND

Today we are free to explore the town, with its beaches, markets and curio shops. A huge variety of adventure options are available, including quad biking, sky diving, dune boarding, ocean safari, fishing and much more. To really get the feel of Swakopmund, we will eat at local restaurants on both nights (own expense).

DAY 11: SPITZKOPPE

Today we head north up the Skeleton Coast, a barren and desolate stretch of coastline trapped between the Atlantic Ocean and the Namib Desert, with scattered ship wrecks littering the beaches. The Bushmen called this “The Land That God Made in Anger”. We visit Cape Cross, named for the crosses erected by Portuguese explorers in the late 1400s. Today this protected area, Cape Cross Seal Reserve, is home to tens of thousands of Cape Fur Seals and one of the largest seal colonies in the world.

We venture back inland, travelling through the vast desert to the towering granite peaks of the Spitzkoppe, its highest peak stretching 600 meters above the desert floor, amongst a riot of giant boulders and secret caves. We have the afternoon to explore this monolith, camping tonight at the foot of the mountain .

Etosha is unique. At its heart is a vast salt pan, Etosha Pan, nearly 5000km² of dazzling white, sun-baked lake bed in the dry winter, and a shallow sea with tens of thousands of strutting flamingos, jumping fish and lurking terrapins in summer. DAY 10: SWAKOPMUND

Today we are free to explore the town, with its beaches, markets and curio shops. A huge variety of adventure options are available, including quad biking, sky diving, dune boarding, ocean safari, fishing and much more. To really get the feel of Swakopmund, we will eat at local restaurants on both nights (own expense).

DAY 11: SPITZKOPPE

Today we head north up the Skeleton Coast, a barren and desolate stretch of coastline trapped between the Atlantic Ocean and the Namib Desert, with scattered ship wrecks littering the beaches. The Bushmen called this “The Land That God Made in Anger”. We visit Cape Cross, named for the crosses erected by Portuguese explorers in the late 1400s. Today this protected area, Cape Cross Seal Reserve, is home to tens of thousands of Cape Fur Seals and one of the largest seal colonies in the world.

We venture back inland, travelling through the vast desert to the towering granite peaks of the Spitzkoppe, its highest peak stretching 600 meters above the desert floor, amongst a riot of giant boulders and secret caves. We have the afternoon to explore this monolith, camping tonight at the foot of the mountain .

DAY 12 – 13: ETOSHA

Etosha is unique. At its heart is a vast salt pan, Etosha Pan, nearly 5000km² of dazzling white, sun-baked lake bed in the dry winter, and a shallow sea with tens of thousands of strutting flamingos, jumping fish and lurking terrapins in summer. Surrounding this pan is a varied landscape of bushveld and grassland, home to hundreds of species of wildlife.
We will spend these days exploring the expanses of park from the high vantage point of our vehicle, game driving and visiting water holes. During peak season, when the rest camps are crowded, we may opt to camp outside the park.

DAY 14: CAPRIVI

Today we cover some distance, travelling through towns and villages of northern Namibia, giving us a glimpse into the daily lives of the local people. We arrive on the banks of the Okavango River, suddenly green, lush and inviting. Not far from here the river empties into the Okavango Delta, but right here the river is strong and deep, the trees tall and the crocodiles huge. The cool shade of the river bank is a welcome respite from the bright Namibian sun.

DAY 15 – 16: OKAVANGO DELTA

It is with great excitement that we cross the border into Botswana and travel the short distance to the Okavango Delta, the world’s largest inland delta and a truly unique spectacle of nature.

The Okavango River, emanating from central Angola, far to the northwest, flows south- and eastwards, before slowing and spreading into one of the world’s only true inland deltas, creating as it does so a unique ecosystem that supports a huge variety of animal and plant life. The sight of a Jacana striding delicately amongst the flowering lilies, the Bee Eater diving to prey on an unsuspecting insect, and of course the familiar cry of the African Fish Eagle – all combine to create the canvas of one of nature’s unique masterpieces. The river, eventually spilling its contents into the vast plains of the Makgadikgadi sands, disappears.

Our comfortable and well appointed camp on the edge of one of the largest lagoons serves as a base from which we explore. We will glide through narrow reed-lined channels by mokoro, walk on uninhabited islands, and picnic in the wilderness, while learning about the animals and plants of the Delta from local guides who have grown up in the area. Through informal interaction with the guides, we will have the opportunity to learn about the local people and their way of life in this isolated wilderness. We will also have time to simply relax and enjoy the views over a glistening lagoon from a beautiful wooden deck, cold drink in hand, or take a refreshing dip in the pool. We will enjoy a relaxing sunset cruise on a boat. A helicopter flip, to see the vastness of the Delta from the air, is recommended (own expense).

DAY 17: MAUN

Starting early, we begin our journey to frontier town of Maun. We will spend some time stocking up on basic supplies, before travelling the short distance out of town to the DRIFTERS MAUN TENTED LODGE, our stop for the night.

The lodge is situated on the banks of the Boteti River. This river is known to change its flow direction, depending upon the season and rainfall patterns. The lodge offers comfortable en suite accommodation, swimming pool, bar, restaurant and birdlife

DAY 18: END OF TOUR

We enjoy a relaxed morning at the lodge, spending time along the river bank, savouring the tranquillity of the area, or lounging at the swimming pool. For those interested, we recommend a local village walk. Chenoga Village, not far from our lodge, is not on a regular tourist route, so you have the opportunity to explore an authentic village with one of our staff from the lodge, who lives in the village.

The tour will officially come to an end after breakfast. Guests on the shorter tour option can extend their stay in Botswana or continue on their own arrangements.

DAY 1 – 2: CAPE TOWN

We start our tour in Cape Town, considered by many to be one of the world’s most beautiful cities. We meet at the MOJO HOTEL at 13h00, and after a briefing and some formalities, the adventure begins with a hike up Table Mountain, led by our tour guide. The views over the city and the Atlantic Ocean are spectacular. The next day we explore the scenic Cape Peninsula by vehicle, visiting Hout Bay, Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope. We return to the Lodge to freshen up, then head out for dinner and a night of fun at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. On occasion we may have to adjust this itinerary to accommodate the weather.

We spend both our nights at the MOJO HOTEL. Located in Sea Point, the hotel is conveniently situated close to shops, restaurants and the ocean promenade.

DAY 3: WEST COAST

We leave the Mother City behind us and, after one last iconic view of Table Mountain from across the bay, we travel north through the “Swartland” and along the West Coast into Namaqualand, a completely new environment shaped largely by the dry winds blowing off the cold Benguela current. In the early spring this usually barren area comes to life with the blooming of millions of desert flowers, painting the landscape in an unforgettable display of vibrant colours.

Our route is one of contrast and ever-changing scenery, from wide open spaces to the dramatic rock formations found in the Cederberg Mountains. We cover some distance today and overnight in the small town of Springbok, nestled amongst rocky outcrops in the Namaqua Desert.

DAY 4: ORANGE RIVER

Today we cross the border into Namibia, known for its dramatic landscapes and beautiful desert vistas. Once through the border, we travel the short distance to our base on the banks of the Orange River. We are joined by our river guides, and after a quick lunch and a safety briefing, we start the canoe adventure.

The Orange River is the longest river in South Africa and creates a natural border to Namibia. Seen from above, the river forms a green ribbon winding its way through the desert and the towering mountains of the Richtersveld National Park. We glide downstream past twisted rock formations, the desert a stone’s throw from the water. It’s hot, but the water is inviting. In the late afternoon we return back to camp and enjoy the evening next to the river.

DAY 5: FISH RIVER CANYON

Today we head to the magnificent Fish River Canyon, second in size only to the Grand Canyon. Formed over hundreds of millions of years, the 160km long ravine is a testament to the inexorable power of nature and evidence of ice ages and raging torrents past. Today the Fish River flows only during the wet summer months, reduced to pools of stagnant water in the dry winter. We will inspect nature’s handiwork from the lip of the canyon. We camp nearby, at Hobas.

DAY 6: FISH RIVER CANYON – NAMIB

Today we follow a beautifully scenic road into the true Namib, to our destination for the next two nights, the GREENFIRE DESERT CAMP. Located on our 7000 hectare private reserve in the Namib Rand, home to numerous species of desert adapted fauna and flora, the camp is nestled against a rock outcrop, surrounded by stark mountains and red dune-fields. The reserve offers visitors a private and exclusive desert experience, spectacular vistas, and time to discover the vibrant, living desert, with plants and animals ingeniously adapted to the environment.

DAY 7: NAMIB DESERT

We conduct a morning walk with our guide to gain close-up insight into the desert and its unique geology and ecology. During the heat of the day it’s customary to relax at the camp, to enjoy the plunge pool and a cold drink, but the energetic are free to explore the surrounding rock formations, to birdwatch, or to sit alone high up on a rock, mesmerised by the changing colours of the vast landscape. In the afternoon we explore a bit further afield on an open vehicle desert drive, searching for gemsbok and bat-eared foxes, before stopping at a suitable place to enjoy the red sunset over a traditional sun-downer drink. Once it is dark, we slowly drive back to the camp, hoping to encounter some of the nocturnal animals common to the area, such as porcupine, aardvark, or brown hyena.

DAY 8: SOSSUSVLEI

An early start, we travel directly to Sesriem and the dune fields of Sossusvlei. Here we climb one of the biggest sand dunes on earth, to reveal rank upon rank of dunes marching into the distance. As the day warms we come down from our high perch to take an open 4×4 vehicle into the heart of Sossusvlei and Deadvlei. We explore these world-renowned landmarks on foot, the varied colours of the ever silent red dunes, the white salt pan and the utterly stark beauty a truly memorable experience.
The 4×4’s return us to our vehicle. We stop to view Sesriem Canyon, and then continue into the desert where we camp for the night.

DAY 9: DUNES – SWAKOPMUND

A relatively short journey today, we cross Kuiseb Canyon and Namib-Naukluft National Park, stopping briefly in Walvis Bay, Namibia’s major port, before arriving in the seaside town of Swakopmund. Established in 1892, the German colonial influence is evident in the history, architecture, culture and cuisine of the town to this day. Modern Swakopmund is a visitor’s paradise, with great restaurants and shops, friendly locals and a multitude of adventure activities on offer. We will spend two nights here, giving us a full day to explore the town, and to be thrilled by our choice of adventure. Zimbabwe/Zambia: Please inquire from your guide about the KAZA visa obtainable at the port of entry into Zimbabwe (this Visa allows you to enter Zambia as well if you should be interested. Please note that you will need a Yellow Fever Certificate to enter Zambia.

Make sure that your passport has at least six months’ validity from your planned date of return to your home country. Make two photocopies of valuable documents such as your passport, tickets, visas. Keep one copy with you in a separate place to the original and leave another copy with someone at home.
Please note that all guests travelling to South Africa will require two blank facing pages in their passport.

FOREIGN CURRENCY

Upon arrival in any respective country we operate in, you will be able to find a Bureau de Change OR ATM Facilities at the airport or in the Town/City the tour is departing from. It is advised to bring any major world currency (US Dollar, Euro or British Pounds) in small denominations and not dated older than 2009. It is advised to get a small amount of local currency upon arrival just to get around until your tour starts.
On Tour – Please be advised that our guides will inform and show you the best places to exchange any Major World Currency with the best possible exchange rates either before your tour starts or during the course of the tour. Our guides will brief you exactly on where to exchange and roughly how much you will need to exchange after discussing possible optional activities, own expense meals or possible curio stops. Drifters trucks have safe-keeping facilities for extra cash/flight tickets/passport.

The preferred currencies per country are as follows:
• South Africa – ZAR; Rand
• Botswana – Pula
• Zimbabwe – US Dollar (it is the official currency); Rand, Pula, Euros, British pounds (at a bad exchange)

Credit cards are not favored in most parts of Southern Africa so please ensure you will have enough cash to buy goods and possible gratuities.

Areas where you shall be able to use your credit card are as follows:
• Cape Town, Swakopmund for activities, food, accommodation and small extras
• Shopping in Victoria Falls and for activities

INSURANCE
It is compulsory that all passengers make arrangements for adequate travel insurance to financially safeguard against unforeseen circumstances. If you need further information please do not hesitate to contact us. Drifters do not accept responsibility for any loss, injury, damage, accident, fatality, delay or inconvenience experienced whilst on tour. You will be required to complete and sign a full indemnity prior to your tour departure.
Your insurance should include all the countries and territories that your tour will pass through. You must ensure that you have sufficient cover for medical and evacuation costs, and should base this on advice from your insurer. A minimum benefit of USD 60 000.00 is recommended for evacuation from any area in which Drifters operates in Africa to South Africa, with further benefits for medical costs in South Africa, and for possible repatriation to your home country. Please note that you will be required to furnish details of your travel insurance to Drifters before you will be allowed to travel with us. Please ensure that these details are completely and accurately recorded in order to facilitate a claim should this be necessary.

HEALTH PRECAUTIONS & REQUIREMENTS

The only necessary prophylaxis for Southern Africa is against Malaria (Botswana and Zimbabwe). Adequate chemo-prophylaxis are essential. Prevention is better than cure, so we do advise to also use insect repellent on exposed areas after sunset. Please consult with your general practitioner regarding this.All Drifters guides have first aid boxes for use in emergencies, however we recommend that you bring along your own basic supply of medication, headache tablets etc.

WEATHER CONDITIONS

Please note that Southern African weather conditions vary tremendously from season to season. During summer months temperatures of up to 40°C can be experienced. During the winter months of June, July and August the nights are very cold, temperatures may drop well below 0°C, although the day temperatures will be pleasant at around 20°C. Please take weather conditions into consideration when choosing a sleeping bag for your tour.

** Luggage should be limited to a maximum of 20kg’s. Each Drifters Traveler have their own locker on our trucks which is accessible even while driving. Backpacks, Barrelbags or Soft Suitcases are strongly advisable as your standard Hard Suitcases sometimes don’t fit into the lockers.

MEALS AND REFRESHMENTS

Meals are provided as indicated in the brochure/website. We do not provide meals on the first day of your tour. We do however stop en-route; therefore it is always possible to buy something along the way. Soft drinks, bottled water and alcohol are for your own expense; there is ample opportunity during the tour to buy refreshments. The guide will advise when you need to stock up for a couple of days.

PERSONAL EXPENSES

A reasonable amount of personal spending money must be brought on our tours. This is to cover own expense meals as indicated in our Drifters Brochure, bottled water, soft drinks, alcohol, sundry goods purchased- such as suntan cream etc., curios, optional extra excursions, airport tax, transfers and tips.

In Africa things work a little different to the rest of the World. Tipping or gratuity, unless otherwise specified, is not included in the price you pay for services delivered. This accounts for restaurant meals, casual help and the services of the guide or guides that you will meet on your tour.
In Southern and East Africa it is classified as a common courtesy to TIP “casual help (guides)”.
This TIP is not something that is forced upon you by any means, but in many industries of tourism it is customary. It works as follows: if you believe your guide has lived up to your expectations and has performed his/her job in a way that you respect and are happy with the services rendered, an amount of R 50 per day or equivalent amount of R50 per day in any major currency per person per day would constitute a fantastic tip. Remember that this is just a guideline and is not by any means compulsory, but seen as common courtesy in Southern and East Africa.
